"Book It Across America" 3rd Annual Summer Reading Program

Collinwood Depot Branch Library has had it’s 3rd Annual Summer Reading Program.  This year’s theme was “Book It Across America”.  We also had an additional “Teen Zone” Reading Program.  The programs began on June 8 and went through July 10.  We had many to come and register for the program. They were divided into two categories: will read 5 books or more in the Juvenile classification and will read or listen to 15 books or more in the Easy classification.  Each week the participants  received prizes when checking out books from the library.  WE HAD A TOTAL OF 1,230 BOOKS READ DURING THIS TIME!!  There were 74 participants who completed the programs.

During our program we had one story time.   Our Blue Grass Regional Library presented a “Roundup” story time dressed as cowboys and cowgirls.  The children enjoyed two stories and a “cowpie” toss.

We were also able to offer a ½ price Scholastic Book Fair again this year.  We had “Family Day” with special appearances of “Ms.  Frizzle”, “Franklin” and “Curious George” with free activities and balloons for the kids.   We were able to obtain over $500 in books from the fair proceeds.  Thank you for your wonderful support of our Fair!

Our readers who received a certificate of completion and were rewarded with a Grand Finale

Pool/Pizza Party with Radio Station Star 94 were:

Abby Blalock, Sierra Blalock, Kelbi Brewer, Tyler Brown, Ina Butler, Jena Butler, Jake Calton, Luke Calton, Rae-Shelle Champion, Whitney Coffman, Kelly Conway, Jordan Cook, Journey Cook, Kasandria Cruz, Crystal Daniel, Abigail Dial, Emily Dial, Ariel Edwards, Ally Haddock, Alexis Haddock, Alyssa Haddock, Emily Haddock, Ben Hanback, Katie Hanback, Tiffani Hinton, Mac Holt, William Howells, Stephanie Johnson, Brandon Johnson, Johnathan Johnson, Kara Kephart, Vivian Lesende, Alishia Logan, Mary Martin, Lee Martin, Chassity Martin, Cody McCrary, Chandler McWilliams, Blake McWilliams, Jessica Pigg, Joshua Price, Zachary Price, Joseph Rich, Leslie Sherrill, Brandi Sherrill, Brittany Sherrill, Cassidy Skaggs, Samantha Skaggs, Kacey Smith, Dakota Smith, Kaylee Smith, Jacob Statom, Drew Statom, Justin Stults, Tyler Stults, Keifer Stults, Alex Thrasher, Andy Thrasher, Christopher Tilley, Justin Tilley, Cameron Tilley, Samantha Todd, Lonnie Victory, Barry Victory, Kerry West, Christen West, Lyndsay West, Brian West, Hayley West, Chaley Whitehead, Gage Whitehead, Jax Williams, Karli Witt, and Presley Witt.

This year 5 Reading Star ribbons were awarded to the overall readers in the “Book It Across America” program.  Each category had top boy and girl overall reader awards.  Our winners were: Ariel Edwards, who read 76 books and Alex Thrasher, who read 49 books in the 15 or more books category.  Tiffani Hinton and Alishia Logan tied with 24 books read and Chandler McWilliams with 17 books read in the 5 or more books category.   They received gift packs from Radio Station Star 94 or a “Book It Across America” book bag.  Everyone that completed the “Book It Across America” program was entered in cash drawings of $10 that was sponsored by Wayne County Bank in Collinwood.  The winners of these drawings were: Jordan Cook, Ben Hanback, Karli Witt, Kelbi Brewer, and Lonnie Victory.

We did not have overall reader awards in the “Teen Zone” program this year but are very proud of our teens for taking the time to read and participate in the program this summer.   The Wayne County Bank in Collinwood donated cash for drawings where every teen that completed the program was entered in the drawings.  Our winners were: Stephanie Johnson ($50); Jake Calton ($25); Brian West ($15); and Kacey Smith ($10).

All those who completed either program was invited to our Friday night Pool/Pizza Party at the Collinwood City Pool.  We had 60 children who were able to attend the party this year.  It was a big success!  During the Pool/Pizza Party,  we had a special treat this year with  D.J., Joey Yarber, and Keith Davis from radio station Star 94.9.   Star 94 was able to present every child who attended the Pool/Pizza Party with a certificate for a dozen of  Krispy Kreme donuts.  This was a special treat that thrilled us all!  Everyone had a good time listening to Star 94 , swimming, eating pizza, and drinking ice cold drinks.

A special Thank You to our sponsors this year: Wayne County Bank in Collinwood, Quigley’s General Store, Dicus Lumber Company,  City of Collinwood, and Radio Station Star 94.9 . We are very appreciative of all of our sponsors, children, and parents for all your support of the Reading Program each year!!
